The early 1700s was a significant era of travelers passing through the Blue Ridge and Alleghany Mountains. The Boone families first settled among the Irish Quakers in Philadelphia. George Boone, the grandfather of Daniel Boone set the precedent for his heirs having large families. Also, the descendants of George Boone continued the use of first names. For instance, the name “Squire” Boone was carried forward. Daniel’s uncle Squire Boone left Philadelphia and crossed through the western reaches of the Virginia Colony. During the migration period, Native Indian tribes occupied Kentucky and it was not until The Treaty of 1744 that the Indians gave the colonists the right to settle along the Indian Road. Yet, the Indian Wars of 1756 to 1763 stopped settlers altogether. Afterward, however, Wilderness Road was cut leading into Kentucky and ending at the Ohio River where the Shawnee had their stronghold. Eventually, great numbers of migrants traveled south of the Shenandoah Valley to the Roanoke River to the town of Big Lick.
