Major Benjamin Netherland was born in Powhatan County, Virginia in 1755. He first went to Cuba as his father’s agent to dispose of his tobacco crop where he heard that Sir Peter Parker was to attack Charleston. He left his cargo and ran the blockade to Charleston where he helped to defend Fort Moultrie from British capture.
In 1777, Netherland accompanied General Lafayette on his journey from Charleston as far as Mecklenburg County, North Carolina. Lafayette was en route to Philadelphia to render his services to General Washington on behalf of American liberty.
Netherland remained in Charlotte, North Carolina until 1781 when he took part in the battle of Guilford Courthouse before going to Kentucky the following year and he served with the Kentucky troops at Estill Station where they were defeated. From 1781 to 1784, Major Netherland participated in nearly all of the Indian battles. In 1782, he accompanied George Rogers Clark on his expedition to push the Indians for the wrongs at Blue Licks. In 1784, he was General Harmar in his defeat and General Wayne in his victory at Fallen Timbers. At that time, he was instrumental in punishing the men who had perpetrated the slaughter at Blue Licks. He returned to North Carolina in 1788 where he married his boyish sweetheart, Miss Theodosia Bramlett, a daughter of the distinguished Revolutionary War fighter, Colonel Bramlett, and settled on a farm five miles east of Nicholasville. Then, in 1794, he moved to Nicholasville and built a hotel on Main and Chestnut Streets called Mingo Tavern. He kept this house until 1838 when he died.
